Maths Leader: Mrs Johnston
What do we want our children to achieve from our Maths curriculum?
Maths is an extremely important part of the curriculum at Broomhill Primary School. We have developed a maths curriculum that is progressive, challenging and engaging. We know the importance of fluency and confident number sense. We offer all children the opportunity to work with a variety of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, regardless of age. We reinforce the knowledge taught through discrete daily Arithmetic lessons in order to help build fluency and confidence.
We aim for our children to develop the necessary skills to make them mathematical thinkers. Teachers ensure that maths learning is applied to different contexts by ensuring fluency, problem solving and reasoning are taught consistently each day.
How do we ensure that this happens?
Within our daily Maths session, we ensure:
- White Rose Mixed Age Planning is followed across the whole school.
- Each lesson begins with a Flashback 4. This is then marked with the children.
- Each Maths lesson will include a core Fluency aspect linked to the daily objective.
- Each maths lesson will include Problem Solving and Reasoning challenges linked to the daily objective to embed understanding.
Daily Arithmetic Lessons from Year 1 – Year 6:
- Y1/2 - 10 daily questions
- Y3/4 - 20 daily questions
- Y5/6 - 30 daily questions
- These are marked collaboratively at the end of each session to identify and correct any misconceptions.
