Art and DT Lead: Miss LillieĀ
What do we want our children to achieve from our Art and DT curriculum?
We want our children to be creative, confident and curious learners who enjoy expressing their ideas through art and design. They will develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and design, and learn to make choices about how to approach creative challenges. Children will explore the work of artists and designers, understanding how art and design reflect history, culture and the world around them. They will learn to talk about and evaluate their own work and that of others, taking pride in their achievements and drawing inspiration from our local area and the wider world.
How do we ensure this happens?
The foundations of our Art and DT curriculum are built in EYFS, where children are encouraged to develop their creativity and fine motor skills through structured activities and build on their play through high-quality interactions. Children are supported to explore drawing, painting, sculpture, materials and simple construction. Our young children often lead their own creative learning journey in Art and DT, while staff scaffold learning with core artistic and design vocabulary and a nurturing approach.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, our Art and DT curriculum is taught through sequenced units that develop skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, design and making. Subject-specific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited. Lessons regularly include practical exploration, designing, making and evaluating, and are contextualised through the study of artists, designers and real-world design problems. Additional opportunities allow children to refine techniques, develop creativity and strengthen their ability to evaluate and improve their own work.
